Title:  Sphere packing in n-dimensional Euclidean space

Abstract:   I will discuss the problem of maximizing the packing density of hyperspheres in n dimensions. This has applications to the structure of materials in low dimensions and to error-correcting codes in arbitrary dimensions. I will discuss packings based on lattices, as well as lower and upper bounds on the maximum density. This talk is based on a series of lectures given by Henry Cohn at the Park City Mathematics Institute this summer.
